Things we love: Farmers Markets!
Historically, Simi Valley was home to large cattle ranches, fruitful orchards, and family farmsteads that have gradually faded away as the city of Simi Valley has grown. While the city of Simi Valley is now a quiet suburban area—home to many families, gorgeous outdoor spaces and thriving businesses—one thing that will never change is Simi's agricultural and farming legacy! However, if there’s one thing Simi Valley residents appreciate more than our history and local grub hubs, it's our weekly Farmers’ Market on Tapo Canyon and Alamo on Friday from 11am to 4pm!
Simi Valley’s Farmers’ Market is one of the places residents can visit to get their hands on local food and goodies! You can find any and everything from deliciously unconventional baked goods and farm-fresh produce, to healing crystals and clothing. If food, shopping and fun is what you’re seeking, you’ll find plenty of it here! Be sure to check out these delights while you're there:
1. Grab a tamale and some kettle corn!
You’ll be happy to know that the tamales available at the Farmer’s Market are absolutely spectacular. The tamale vendor offers chicken tamales, cheese and green chili tamales, gluten-free tamales and many others! The masa is incredibly flavorful, and you’ll find that although they provide you with salsa to top your tamale with, it’s already so delicious that it really doesn’t need it! Right next door to the tamales is the kettle corn stand, so if your tamales don't fill you up, perhaps a warm bag of Carmel or regular kettle corn will do the trick! It’s the perfect thing to snack on while meandering through the market.
2. Take a loaf!
Zucchini bread, banana bread, marble bread, lemon bread, chocolate chip bread; Yankee Doodle Bakery has it all waiting for you! As soon as you walk over, you’re greeted with a delicious sample (yay!) and they’re ready to assist you and your taste buds in finding the delicious loaf for you. Their breads are so scrumptious and moist, and they’re a great example of a sweet bread that's not overwhelmingly sweet. They would pair fabulously with coffee for a late afternoon pick-me-up!
3. Honey!
Based in Ventura County, Blue Ridge Honey produces delectable raw honeys from their collection of beehives in our area. Even if honey isn’t your thing, we encourage you to take a look at their selection (including their Sage, Orange Blossom, Raspberry and Wildflower honeys); paying particular attention to their Avocado variety. Now we know what you’re thinking…”Avocado honey?” But it just so happens that the honey is actually produced in hives within a close proximity to avocado trees, giving the honey its name. Additionally, you’ll be glad to know that the honey doesn’t taste like avocado either! We were floored when we realized the avocado honey could actually work quite nicely as a molasses or maple syrup alternative!
4. Fruits and Veggies
Any farmers’ market trip wouldn’t be complete without fresh local produce and it was for that reason that we stopped at the market’s G Farms, Angelo’s Farm, and the YNT Farming vendors! Floral arrangements, fruits and veggies—oh my! You can find a number of apricots, peaches, plums, carrots, lettuce, zucchinis, cucumbers, tomatoes and SO much more with these vendors. You’ll find that their peach, plum and apricot samples are a juicy and healthy delight on your food excursion.
5. The Shops!
The final part of the Farmers’ Market houses clothing, healing crystals and jewelry shops. Immediately the shops’ rustic and colorful products catch your eye. Numerous shirts, dresses, necklaces, bracelets and rings can be found; each one a beautiful as the next. All the items are eclectic and different, and not easily found elsewhere.
If you have a Friday afternoon to yourself, be sure to check out the Farmers’ Market. It’s right next to the TGI Fridays restaurant on Tapo Canyon and Alamo. Be sure to swing by!
